Hill House makes Happy Campers!

Do you have a young adult family member with moderate to severe developmental disabilities? Are they bored this summer? Would they like to go on a staycation? Would you like them to go on a staycation?

A couple of weeks ago Matthew participated in a week long “camp” at Hill House. He went on boat trip up at Avila, hiking at Red Rock and to Farmer’s Market up on SLO. He also helped plan and cook meals, did chores, went grocery shopping, did his laundry and lived with two other roommates for the week.

And he had a blast!

Normally Hill House is a program supported by the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District and Tri-Counties Regional Center and runs during the school year teaching our kids how to live and work independently. During the summer, though, it’s all about fun. And learning to live independently.

Camp starts on Monday at 3:00 pm and finishes on Friday am at 9:00. When the kids arrive on Monday they settle into their rooms and then start planning the week. From meals to excursions to chores and everything else. One Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday they live in the apartment and go out on day trips. There is a list of possible outings and they decide as a group where they want to go.

Matthew said it was like staying in the best hotel! He got to go swimming and do fun stuff and be independent. And he’s looking forward to going back!

Staff is provided 24/7 by Work, Inc. and the program is overseen by Tri Coutnies. You do need to help pitch in financially – $60.00. Well worth it, I say!
