Amazing Boy Runner Is a Champion Despite Cerebral Palsy

My son Matthew is missing his High School Track Buddies. Track and Cross Country were wonderful experiences for him, not just athletically but socially. One of Matthew’s Best Buddies, Roland, has CP and he ran the 100m and 200m. Watching the other kids cheer them on was very special.  So when I ran across this article again, I thought it was worth sharing – just in case you are wondering not only if your child can participate but if they should.

Ben’s parents never even thought he would walk. Ben has cerebral palsy, which makes his limbs stiff and difficult to control. But as it turned out, Ben wouldn’t just walk, he would run. And keep on running.

Games help cerebral palsy sufferers

Why Cerebral Palsy Isn’t Stopping Me From Cycling

The benefits that cycling has brought me has been enormous. I feel fantastic both physically and mentally. Despite having two academic degrees, I find it difficult you [sic] secure employment opportunities so cycling has increasingly taken a bigger place in my life. I cycle a few days a week with friends and sometimes on my own. Initially I was uneasy about cycling unaccompanied. I have difficulty changing punctures and was generally worried that anything went wrong. I have gradually built up my confidence however and regularly cycle on my own and actually really enjoy it. I enjoy the space to myself and to freedom this gives me.

Finding the Right Educational Fit for the Cerebral Palsy Child

…the classroom where the child learns needs to be physically arranged to suit the child. The child needs to be able to move about freely and without hindrance. The child may need to be seated near the front of the room, and may need FM audio amplification systems, modified writing paper, oral assessments and other modifications that the school team can identify.
