My Son has Autism – Living in the Present Tense

The debate continues to rage over what causes Autism – from vaccines to genetics and a million other suspected villains.

I don’t care.

Ok, not that it’s not important. It is. But not for my son.

He’s already autistic and  how he got that way doesn’t matter. His genes are what they are and he’s already had his vaccines and I can’t undo that.

It’s what we do now that counts. We live now. Not before he “became” Autistic, whenever that was. And not in some future that I can’t see in a crystal ball.

I have talked to so many caregivers and service providers who say that the parents they work with are obsessed with what caused it. Our Family has been living with Autism for over 13 years. So from this side of the fence I say, “Get over it.” As harsh as that sounds, I do mean it compassionately. But now it’s time to deal.

What now? How to you live with it? What are the options, the therapies, the programs and services that will help your Autistic Family Member and your entire Family have a higher Quality Of Life.

For those who come after us the research on what causes Autism is  vitally important. But Matthew and I have to live now. In the Age of Autism. And we  have to advocate for those who come after us. The blog Age of Autism is doing that and I recommend you check it out if you have a Family Member with Autism.
